Week 4-52 Small changes to Happiness

Week 4-52 Small changes to Happiness by Brett Blumenthal small change to add this year is keeping a food journal.

Keeping a food diary may be a key to losing extra weight, a new study shows it has a sense of accountability-and also a proven method of increased weight loss.

• Write as you go. Don’t wait until the end of the day to record what you ate and drank. “We recommend they write it down as soon as they can after they eat.”

• Focus on portion size. Practice at home with measuring cups, measuring spoons, or food scales. And be aware that people tend to underestimate how much food they’re served.

• Use whatever type of food diary works for you. It doesn’t matter whether you use scrap paper, a personal digital assistant (PDA), or a notebook. What matters is that you use it.

• Don’t skip your indulgent days. “We encourage people to keep records especially on days when they’re tempted to eat,” says Stevens. “What gets measured tends to get changed.”

• Cook at home. You’ll have more control over what you consume, and you know what that food contains, and how much of it you’re eating. That makes for a more detailed entry in your food diary.

Also, remember that even modest weight loss — even if it doesn’t bring you down to your ideal weight — may have health benefits.

Please let me know how these small changes are affecting your life.

Week (2)- 52 small changes to happiness.

Still reading 52 small changes to happiness- Last week increasing your water intake-We should be drinking in ounces 1/2 of our body weight to hydrate. (Faith Hills beauty secret she drinks 90 ounces of water per day.) This week we are adding…..sleep the minimum of 7 to 8 hours.

six reasons to get enough sleep:

Learning and memory: Sleep helps the brain commit new information to memory through a process called memory consolidation. In studies, people who’d slept after learning a task did better on tests later.

Metabolism and weight: Chronic sleep deprivation may cause weight gain by affecting the way our bodies process and store carbohydrates, and by altering levels of hormones that affect our appetite.

Safety: Sleep debt contributes to a greater tendency to fall asleep during the daytime. These lapses may cause falls and mistakes such as medical errors, air traffic mishaps, and road accidents.

Mood: Sleep loss may result in irritability, impatience, inability to concentrate, and moodiness. Too little sleep can also leave you too tired to do the things you like to do.

Cardiovascular health: Serious sleep disorders have been linked to hypertension, increased stress hormone levels, and irregular heartbeat.

Disease: Sleep deprivation alters immune function, including the activity of the body’s killer cells. Keeping up with sleep may also help fight cancer.

Happy 2012! Mrs. Fort Worth International and her New Years Resolutions

Happy New Year! Wow it is 2012-

Mrs. Texas International Questions 2012

These are the questions being uploaded to the Mrs. Texas International Website.

I am recording my journey towards Mrs. Texas International to Mrs. International weekly. I will be continuing my blog a Day in a Life of a Beauty Queen and be counting down the weeks torwards my goals this year. Everyone that is competiting they are competing for the coveted crown. However along the way you meet such wonderful, incredible, beautiful inside and out individuals that you develop friendships with all of you having your chosen causes we are like one large Sorority worldwide. Today I hope to hit the milestone of 3000 friends on Facebook.

How do you start each day?

My alarm goes off with the soft sound of chimes at 6:30 a.m. This starts my
day in a very serene and peaceful way. I roll over and kiss my husband on
the forehead, and I thank my lucky stars that I have such a wonderful,
loving individual that has chosen me to be his bride. I sit up and reach
down to pet my two adorable cats Kobe and Onyx, then climb on out of my bed
to get ready for work. Before leaving the house I kiss my husband goodbye
telling him that I love him. I have a one way 41 mile commute so I take
the time to call to speak with or leave a message for my son who is my
pride andjoy in life (of course this is hands-free). Since I have an hour
to commuteI take time in my car to clear my mind and start my positive
focus for the day. Overall I thank the man upstairs for my family, my
friends, and for providing me with a way to be able to give back to my
community. I have been really blessed and I am very thankful for it all.

What is one word that describes you as a wife? Why?

Defining me with just one word is difficult because, as a modern day woman,
I wear many hats. I am a wife, mother, career woman, family, friend and
ambassador for my community, my causes and my beliefs. I have been
described in multiple ways, but I have to go with the word my husband would
use, which is “genuine.” The definition of genuine means “real;” having
the qualities or values claimed; sincerely felt; candid honest and open in
relationships with others. I have found that it is best to be real and to
always be candidly honest in every aspect of my life.

Invite us to your city and explain why we want to vacation there?

When you come to Fort Worth you can experience the Old West in the Fort
Worth Stockyards. Then you can move on and discover a variety of museums
and cultural attractions spanning the old and the new in the greater
downtown areas. Next you can explore the out and indoors alike by shopping
and dining in Sundance Square. In Fort Worth you will experience the most
exciting downtown cities in Texas, thriving with 20, 30 and 40-somethings
alike in pursuit of dining, dancing, fun and quality all wrapped into one
uniquely American area. If you have little ones, or are a little one at
heart, you can visit one of the best zoos in the country. And just 20
minutes northeast of the city you can experience the thrills of NASCAR and
Indy racing on one of the world’s largest racetracks at Texas Motor
Speedway. There is wide variety which appeals to all ages. Come on out and
live the experience. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

What is the best advice you have ever been given?

This will sound like a cliché however it rings very true. My grandmother
use to say “girl-child always be true to yourself and do not compromise
your beliefs because you can do anything that you set your mind to.” These
words are still with me today.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Apart from being one year away from turning a fabulous 50, I see myself
progressing down my already-chosen paths; learning new skills to benefit my
duties as wife, mother, career women, and ambassador for my community, my
causes and my beliefs. Every day I find my life to be extremely interesting
and challenging. These engaging challenges motivate me to find new ways to
grow along with my husband, my son, my family and my friends – as well as
providing me with opportunities to give back to my fellow man.

A Day in A life of a Beauty Queen

A Day in A life of a Beauty Queen

This week in the Pollard household we have experienced an upper chest infection/strep that has been shared with two members of the family. Sometimes not having children at home can be challenging because we don’t build that immunity that parents get when their children are young.

Sitting in my kitchen this evening I watched my kitten go wild at the window, and he was being teased by a baby squirrel. I cracked the window and the baby squirrel had no fear. So I walked some bread with peanut butter out to the ledge because I found it absolutely an adorable interaction with a wild/and domesticated animals. It is funny how Mother Nature works at times.

My husband is leaving out for Bejing, China on Sunday so this weekend is a prep weekend to get him ready, feeling better, and to let him know how special he is ,and I am going to miss him the week of Thanksgiving tremendously. I am thankful for my family, my friends and my life in general is good. I always remind myself there are others that are not as fortunate and that is why we are here. Please keep others that need help in your prayers and help out anyway that you can.

This Thanksgiving please reach out to others; remember to give thanks to the man upstairs as well.

God Bless

A Day in A Life of a Beauty Queen- November 2011

A Day in A Life of a Beauty Queen

I can’t believe that we are already into November. The first freeze has already hit Texas and it is back up to 75 degrees just a few days later. Fall is one of my favorite seasons. You can start to see leaves turn there beautiful seasonal colors, children are back in school itching for vacation and the early display of Christmas items beckoning at me that Christmas is not that far off.

Sometimes in my life I find myself slowing down to appreciate what I have and where I am in my life. This world is crazy at times and it is not always easy to wear the hats sometimes you have to juggle. My husband is everything that I want for a husband good, bad and indifferent. He is my soul mate and my life partner. I do cherish him so. I have been blessed in life with a son who is now just finding his way as a young adult and he gives me joy that I cannot describe as a parent. Two of the men in my life that make my world A-okay!

Kobe and Onyx are my cats. You can definitely tell when you are in my house that they love me unconditionally. Maybe it is because I control the food. 

I am really fortunate that I am at the point in my life that I am able to be able an ambassador for my community and for my causes.

One of my friends from high school placed a post on facebook and listed her friends what they would be as a RP character and she listed me as a healer. It is funny and true. I not only want world peace, I want to heal the world from sickness and hate.

That is it for this evening I will write soon.

Men: Cancer Symptoms You’re Most Likely to Ignore

Since Cancer is not gender, age or race bias- Men here is your information.

Annual checkups and tests such as colonoscopies and PSA assays are important, but it’s not a good idea to rely on tests alone to protect you from cancer. It’s just as important to listen to your body and notice anything that’s different, odd, or unexplainable. (You should also listen to those close to you, such as a wife or partner, because others sometimes notice things we’re unaware of—or don’t want to admit.) You don’t want to join the ranks of cancer patients who realize too late that symptoms they’d noticed for a long time could have sounded the alarm earlier, when cancer was easier to cure.

1. Upset stomach or stomachache

One of the first signs colon cancer patients remember experiencing when they look back is unexplained stomach aches. Those with pancreatic cancer describe a dull ache that feels like it’s pressing inward. Many liver cancer patients say they went in complaining of stomach cramps and upset stomachs so frequently that their doctors thought they had ulcers. Liver cancer patients and those with leukemia can experience abdominal pain resulting from an enlarged spleen, which may feel like an ache on the lower left side.

If you have a stomachache that you can’t attribute to a digestive problem or that doesn’t go away, ask your doctor to order an ultrasound. Finding a liver or pancreatic tumor early can make all the difference in treatment.

2. Chronic “acid stomach” or feeling full after a small meal

The most common early sign of stomach cancer is pain in the upper or middle abdomen that feels like gas or heartburn. It may be aggravated by eating, so that you feel full when you haven’t actually eaten much. What’s particularly confusing is that the pain can be relieved by antacids, confirming your conclusion that it was caused by acid in the stomach, when it’s more than that. An unexplained pain or ache in lower right side can be the first sign of liver cancer, known as one of the “silent killers.” Feeling full after a small meal is a common sign of liver cancer as well.

If you have frequent bouts of acid stomach, an unexplained abdominal ache, or a full feeling after meals even when you’re eating less than normal, call your doctor.

3. Unexplained weight loss

If you notice the pounds coming off and you haven’t made changes to your diet or exercise regime, it’s important to find out why. Unexplained weight loss can be an early sign of colon and other digestive cancers; it can also be a sign of cancer that’s spread to the liver, affecting your appetite and the ability of your body to rid itself of waste.

4. Jaundice

Pancreatic cancer, another one of the “silent killers,” is often discovered when someone notices jaundice and asks the doctor to do a battery of tests. Jaundice is most commonly thought of as a yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, but darker-than-normal urine that’s not the result of dehydration is also a sign. Clay-colored stools are another little-known sign of jaundice. Oddly, jaundice can also cause itching, because the bile salts in the bloodstream cause the skin to itch. Some people with pancreatic cancer say they noticed the itching before they noticed the jaundice itself.

5. Wheezing or shortness of breath

One of the first signs lung cancer patients remember noticing when they look back is the inability to catch their breath. “I couldn’t even walk to my car without wheezing; I thought I had asthma, but how come I didn’t have it before?” is how one man described it. Shortness of breath, chest pain, or spitting blood are also signs of testicular cancer that’s spread to the lungs.

6. Chronic cough or chest pain

Several types of cancer, including leukemia and lung tumors, can cause symptoms that mimic a bad cough or bronchitis. One way to tell the difference: The problems persist, or go away and come back again in a repeating cycle. Some lung cancer patients report chest pain that extends up into the shoulder or down the arm.

7. Frequent fevers or infections

These can be signs of leukemia, a cancer of the blood cells that starts in the bone marrow. Leukemia causes the marrow to produce abnormal white blood cells, which crowd out healthy white cells, sapping the body’s infection-fighting capabilities. Doctors sometimes catch leukemia in older adults only after the patient has been in a number of times complaining of fever, achiness, and flu-like symptoms over an extended period of time.

8. Difficulty swallowing

Most commonly associated with esophageal or throat cancer, having trouble swallowing is sometimes one of the first signs of lung cancer, too. Men diagnosed with esophageal cancer look back and remember a feeling of pressure and soreness when swallowing that didn’t go away the way a cold or flu would have. Consult your doctor also if you have a frequent feeling of needing to clear your throat or that food is stuck in your chest; either of these can signal a narrowing of the esophagus that could mean the presence of a tumor.

9. Chronic heartburn

If you just ate half a pizza, heartburn is expected. But if you have frequent episodes of heartburn or a constant low-level feeling of pain in the chest after eating, call your doctor and ask to be screened for esophageal cancer. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)—a condition in which stomach acid rises into the esophagus, causing heartburn and an acidic taste in the throat—can trigger a condition called Barrett’s esophagus, which can be a precursor of esophageal cancer.

10. Swelling of facial features

Some patients with lung cancer report that they noticed puffiness, swelling, or redness in the face. The explanation for this is that small cell lung tumors commonly block blood vessels in the chest, preventing blood from flowing freely from the head and face.

FAQ: Does Sugar Feed Cancer Cells?

11. Swollen lymph nodes or lumps on the neck, underarm, or groin

Enlarged lymph nodes indicate changes in the lymphatic system, which can be a sign of cancer. For example, a lump or an enlarged lymph in the neck or underarm is sometimes a sign of thyroid, head, or throat cancer. A painless lump on the neck, underarm, or groin can be an early sign of leukemia.

12. Excessive bruising or bleeding that doesn’t stop

This symptom usually suggests something abnormal happening with the platelets and red blood cells, which can be a sign of leukemia. One man with leukemia noticed that his gums bled when he brushed his teeth; another described bruising in strange places, such as on his fingers and hands. The explanation: Over time, leukemia cells crowd out red blood cells and platelets, impairing the blood’s ability to carry oxygen and clot.

13. Weakness and fatigue

“I had to stop halfway across the yard and sit down when I was mowing the lawn,” said one man when describing the fatigue that led to his discovery of pancreatic cancer. Generalized fatigue and weakness is a symptom of so many different kinds of cancer (and other ills) that you’ll need to look at it in combination with other symptoms. But any time you feel exhausted without explanation and it doesn’t respond to getting more sleep, talk to your doctor.

14. Rectal bleeding or blood in stool

“I thought it was hemorrhoids” is one of the most common statements doctors hear when diagnosing colorectal cancer. Blood in the toilet alone is reason to call your doctor and schedule a colonoscopy. Another sign of blood in the stool many people miss is stools that are darker in color.

15. Bowel problems

Constipation, diarrhea, and changes in stools can all be signs of cancer. As with many other cancer symptoms, the way to tell if this is cause for concern is if it goes on for more than a few days without a clear cause, such as flu or food poisoning. People diagnosed with colon cancer say they noticed more frequent stools, as well as a feeling that their bowels weren’t emptying completely. One of the early signs of pancreatic cancer is fatty stools, which can be recognized as frequent, large stools that are paler than normal and smelly. This is a sign that your body’s not absorbing your food normally, and it should be brought to your doctor’s attention.

16. Difficulty urinating or changes in flow

Hands-down, the most common early sign of prostate cancer is a feeling of not being able to start peeing once you’re set to go. Many men also report having a hard time stopping the flow of urine, a flow that starts and stops, or a stream that’s weaker than normal. Any of these symptoms is reason to call your doctor for an exam and a screening test for prostate-specific antigen (PSA).

17. Pain or burning during urination

This symptom can also indicate a urinary tract infection or sexually transmitted disease, of course, but in any case it warrants an immediate trip to the doctor. This symptom is often combined with the feeling that you need to go more often, particularly at night. These same symptoms can also indicate inflammation or infection in the prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia, the name for what happens when the prostate grows bigger and blocks the flow of urine. However, you need to get checked out to tell the difference.

18. Blood in urine or semen

Men are often warned about blood in the urine, but they may not realize that blood in semen is also a danger sign for prostate cancer. Blood in the urine or semen isn’t always visible as blood; urine may just be a pink, dark red, or smoky brown color, while blood in the semen may just look like a pinkish streak.

19. Erection problems

As prostate cancer progresses, another very common sign is difficulty getting or sustaining an erection. This can be a difficult subject to talk about, but it’s important to bring it to your doctor’s attention. It could be a sign of sexual dysfunction with another cause, of course, but it’s a reason to have an exam and a PSA test.

20. Pain, aching, or heaviness in the groin, hips, thighs, or abdomen

One sign of prostate cancer is frequent pain in the hips, upper thighs, or the lowest part of the back. Men with testicular cancer report noticing a heavy, aching feeling low in the belly or abdomen, or in the scrotum or testicles themselves. They sometimes describe it as a feeling of downward pulling or as a generalized ache throughout the groin area. Prostate cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes often makes itself known as discomfort in the pelvis or swelling in the legs.

21. Testicular swelling or lump

The lumps that indicate testicular cancer are nearly always painless. It’s also common for a testicle to be enlarged or swollen, but lacking any specific lump that you can see or feel. Some men report feeling discomfort from the enlargement, but not an outright pain.

22. Unexplained back pain

Back pain can mean all sorts of things, of course—most often pulled muscles or disc problems. But unexplained, persistent back pain can be an early sign of cancer as well, so get it checked out. Pain in the lower back and hips can be a sign of prostate cancer, while pain in the upper back can signal lung cancer. A pain in the upper abdomen and back is one of the few early signs of pancreatic cancer.

23. Scaly or painful nipple or chest, nipple discharge

Men do get breast cancer; they also get a condition called gynecomastia, which is a benign lump in the breast area. Breast cancer is usually detected as a lump, but if it’s spreading inward it can also cause chest pain. Other signs of breast cancer include patches of red, scaly, or dimpled skin or changes to the nipple such as turning inward or leaking fluid. Bring any lump, swelling, or skin or nipple problem, or any chest pain, to your doctor’s attention.

24. A sore or skin lump that doesn’t heal, becomes crusty, or bleeds easily

Most of us know to watch moles for changes that might indicate skin cancer. But other signs, such as small waxy lumps or dry scaly patches, are easier to miss. Familiarize yourself with the different types of skin cancer—melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma—and be vigilant about checking skin all over the body for odd-looking growths or spots.

25. Changes in nails

Unexplained changes to the fingernails can be a sign of several types of cancer. A brown or black streak or dot under the nail can indicate skin cancer, while newly discovered “clubbing,” which means enlargement of the ends of the fingers, with nails that curve down over the tips, can be a sign of lung cancer. Pale or white nails can be an indication that your liver is not functioning properly, sometimes a sign of liver cancer.

20 Cancer Symptoms Women Are Most Likely to Ignore

Tips that may save your life

I am all about education, awareness and prevention and every time I come across articles that I have validated as pertinent I am going to post.

20 Cancer Symptoms Women Are Most Likely to Ignore

Routine tests like pap smears and mammograms are important, but don’t rely on tests alone to protect you from cancer. It’s just as important to listen to your body and notice anything that’s different, odd, or unexplainable. Although many of these symptoms could be caused by less serious conditions, they’re worth getting checked out if they persist. You don’t want to join the ranks of cancer patients who realize too late that symptoms they’d noticed for a long time could have sounded the alarm earlier, when cancer was easier to cure.

1. Wheezing or shortness of breath

One of the first signs lung cancer patients remember noticing when they look back is the inability to catch their breath. “I couldn’t even walk across the yard without wheezing. I thought I had asthma, but how come I didn’t have it before?” is how one woman described it. Thyroid cancer can also cause breathing problems if a nodule or tumor begins to press on the trachea, or windpipe. Any breathing difficulties that persist are reason to visit the doctor.

3. Swallowing problems or hoarseness

Most commonly associated with esophageal or throat cancer, difficulty swallowing is sometimes one of the first signs of lung cancer, too. A hoarse or low, husky voice or the feeling of something pressing on the throat can be an early indicator of thyroid cancer or a precancerous thyroid nodule, as can the feeling of having something stuck in your windpipe.

4. Frequent fevers or infections

These can be signs of leukemia, a cancer of the blood cells that starts in the bone marrow. Leukemia causes the marrow to produce abnormal white blood cells, which crowd out healthy white cells, sapping the body’s infection-fighting capabilities. Often, doctors diagnose leukemia only after the patient has been in a number of times complaining of fever, achiness, and flu-like symptoms over an extended period of time.

5. Swollen lymph nodes or lumps on the neck, underarm, or groin

Enlarged lymph nodes indicate changes in the lymphatic system, which can be a sign of cancer. For example, a lump or an enlarged lymph node under the arm is sometimes a sign of breast cancer. A painless lump on the neck, underarm, or groin can be an early sign of leukemia.

6. Bloating or abdominal weight gain — the “my jeans don’t fit” syndrome

While this might sound too common a phenomenon to be considered a cancer symptom, consider this: Women diagnosed with ovarian cancer overwhelmingly report that unexplained abdominal bloating that came on fairly suddenly and continued on and off over a long period of time (as opposed to occurring a few days each month with PMS) was one of the main ways they knew something was wrong.

7. Feeling full and unable to eat

This is another tip-off to ovarian cancer; women say they have no appetite and can’t eat, even when they haven’t eaten for some time. Any woman who experiences noticeable bloating or weight gain numerous times (the diagnostic criteria is more than 13 times over the period of a month) — especially if it’s accompanied by pelvic pain or feeling overly full — should call her doctor and ask for a pelvic ultrasound.

8. Pelvic or abdominal pain

Taken by itself, pelvic pain can mean a lot of things. In fact, because it’s a common symptom of fibroids, ovarian cysts, and other reproductive tract disorders, doctors don’t always think of cancer when you describe pelvic pain. Make sure your doctor looks at all possible explanations and does a full exam, since pain and cramping in the pelvis and abdomen can go hand in hand with the bloating that often signals ovarian cancer. Leukemia can also cause abdominal pain resulting from an enlarged spleen.

9. Unusually heavy or painful periods or bleeding between periods

Many women reported this as the tip-off to endometrial or uterine cancer. Unfortunately, many women also said their doctors weren’t responsive, overlooking or misdiagnosing their complaints as normal perimenopause. Ask for a transvaginal ultrasound if you suspect something more than routine heavy periods.

10. Rectal bleeding or blood in stool

“I thought it was hemorrhoids” is one of the most common things doctors hear when diagnosing colorectal cancer. Blood in the toilet alone is reason to call your doctor and schedule a colonoscopy.

I can remember in 1977 walking into my first Girl Scouts of America weekly meeting on Wednesday afternoon. I can say that the GSUSA organization taught me skills that I still use today. My family was not well off and economically challenged at times, but I can honestly say that Girls Scouts was one of the highlights of my childhood.

In 1912 Juliette Gordon Low-met Robert Baden-Powell (founder of scouting), and as soon as she returned home to Savannah Georgia she called her cousin stating that she had something for the girls of Savannah, all of America, and the World and we are going to start it tonight.

Young ladies get involved into the community, sales, and working on achieving milestones. Girl Scouts helps develop skills and friendships that they will carry through their lives.

Next year is 2012 and GSUSA is 100 years old. April 26, 2011 I was asked to be the Mistress of Ceremonies for the Texas/Oklahoma Plains for the Fort Worth Branch. It was an incredible evening and I look forward to being involved in the GSUSA organization for many years.

A Day in A Life of a Beauty Queen- October 30, 2011

It is Sunday Morning and I am at the table eating my bowl of cereal, drinking my cup of coffee and perusing through the Sunday morning paper cutting my coupons. This Sunday October 30, 2011 the Texas Health Resources added a special supplement to the paper.

“Texas Health Resources cares for the most hearts in North Texas. I am a wife, a mother, career women, my cat’s caretaker, and I am a voice in my community. The International Pageant system nationwide platform is the American Heart Associations, Go Red for Women. Heart disease is the #1 killer of women. It is important that we educate ourselves about:

Understand what a Healthy level should be for Blood Pressure and Cholesterol.

The Myth of clutching the chest like Fred Sanford in Sanford and Son is a dramatic cliché at best. If having an attack you should look for the following:

Shortness of Breath
Unusual Fatigue or Weakness
A cold or clammy sweat
Dizziness
Nausea
Chest pains
Back or jaw pain
Deep aching and throbbing pain in one or both arms
Fluttering or rapid heartbeats

A pressure-like chest pain between the breasts that may radiate to the left arm or shoulder
Because certain symptoms mimic other common illnesses such as depression or stress, doctors can sometimes miss the cues. Therefore, you must as an individual know what is normal for your own bodies and be vigilant about getting the appropriate care.

The good news is that 80% of cardiac events for women and men can be prevented through lifestyle changes such as eating right, exercise and maintaining the appropriate weight.

Join me and our other International Queens about providing awareness and education so we can eliminate Heart Disease all together.

October is Cancer Awareness Month

October is Cancer Awareness Month

Remember Ladies to get your yearly Mammograms and if something doesn’t feel right “Don’t Put It Off~Protect and Prevent,” go get checked out. This may save your life.

October marks National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an international health campaign that raises awareness, empowers survivors, and assists in preventing the disease. This year in the United States alone over 230,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and over 40,000 will die of the disease. There is a good chance that someone you know personally will be affected by this horrible disease in their lifetime.

The affordability of treatment for women diagnosed with breast cancer, the second leading type of cancer among women, has also become a growing concern for recent patients. As health care costs increase each passing year, women with breast cancer are facing mounting out-of-pocket costs for treatment. Breast cancer patients, even those covered by employer-based insurance, average a total of $6,250 out-of-pocket expenses. These women are frequently forced to make decisions based on their finances and not always on what is best for their health.

Picking a Pageant Platform

Picking your Platform
By Angela Pollard

Picking a platform it should be personal for you. First, how do you personally relate to your platform choice? How does it affect you and why did you choose it? How can you be an ambassador for your cause? How can you make a difference?

For example, speaking from my own experience of competing in the Mrs. Pageants I chose my platform because of my dealing with my grief of losing my Mother to Breast Cancer. I got involved by reaching out to volunteer for several organizations. I became an educator/speaker for one of the organizations. I as a title holder make multiple appearances, raise funds and provide community awareness to my cause. I also use several forms of social media to empower and educate others. There are many ways that you can work your platform.

You must also believe what you are doing makes a difference. It is important to be real and always be yourself. Remember you are a role model for others and it always best to lead by example. It is so important that you enjoy working with your platform. This will make all the difference in the world. By picking a platform that you genuinely and thoroughly enjoy, you will ensure that your entire year as a pageant titleholder will be full of exciting events for you and your supporters.

I have had the privilege of judging several of the pageant systems and in the Platform Pageants as a judge I am looking for the personal connection and what you are planning to do as a title holder. Again it is important that your platform is a reflection of you. Remember always be yourself and have fun.
